The timing and duration of the coldest period in the last glacial stage, often referred to as the last glacial maximum (LGM), has been observed to vary spatially and temporally. In Australia, this period is characterised by colder, and in some places more arid, climates than today. We applied Monte-Carlo change point analysis to all available continuous proxy records covering this period, primarily pollen records, from across Australia (n = 37) to assess this change. We find a significant change point occurred (within uncertainty) at 28.6 ± 2.8 ka in 25 records. We interpret this change as a shift to cooler climates, associated with a widespread decline in biological productivity. An additional change point occurred at 17.7 ± 2.2 ka in 24 records. We interpret this change as a shift towards warmer climates, associated with increased biological productivity. We broadly characterise the period between 28.6 (± 2.8) – 17.7 (± 2.2) ka as an extended period of maximum cooling, with low productivity vegetation that may have occurred as a combined response to reduced temperatures, lower moisture availability and atmospheric CO2. These results have implications for how the spatial and temporal coherence of climate change, in this case during the LGM, can be best interrogated and interpreted.

It was with considerable hesitation that I finally accepted the kind invitation of Vernon Brooks and the Organizing Committee of this Symposium to say a few words at the end giving some of my impressions of the presentations and discussion and reflections on the remarkable advances in our knowledge of motor systems that has occurred during recent years. I have been asked also if I would try to place some of these findings from experimental laboratories in the context of clinical experience with diseases and disorders of motor control. I would like to draw particular attention to the importance of state dependent reactions in which patterns of behavior are set up, even including spinal reflexes, by present programs depending on the general or directional reactive state of the organism.

A review of some of my personal recollections and research into the early development of neuroscience in Canada seems particularly appropriate at this time since we have just celebrated the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Montreal Neurological Institute which not only played a leading role in the early development of neuroscience in Canada, but also had considerable impact upon the development of both clinical and basic neuroscience throughout the world. The concept of the fusion of all the varied disciplines concerned with studies of the nervous system into one integrated “neuroscience” as we know it today in the Society for Neuroscience was not known when Dr. Penfield established the Montreal Neurological Institute with this in mind. He recruited colleagues in neurochemistry, neurophysiology, neuroanatomy, pathology, and neuropsychology to work in close association with clinical neurologists and neurosurgeons. Fellows were attracted from many countries for training in all of these disciplines and shared his dream of an integrated neuroscience aimed at a better understanding of the function of the nervous system underlying behaviour and mental function and more rational treatment of neurological diseases.
The inspiration, enthusiasm, and tireless determination of Dr. Penfield during the difficult times for the initial few years and during the most productive years of rapid growth following World War II, helped develop the Institute into a leading centre for research and training of neuroscientists in Canada, and also served as a catalyst for the rapid development of neuroscience in other centres throughout Canada and the United States. As one of my French colleagues has expressed it, the Institute was the “mother house” of neuroscience in Canada. It soon became a truly international institute of worldwide reknown.
